Mite AwayII™ - For treatment of honey bee colonies infested with varroa or tracheal mites. Mite AwayII™ is a ready-to-use formic acid pad for treatment against varroa mites and tracheal mites in honey bee colonies.
 Mite AwayII™ requires a single application per treatment to reduce the number of varroa mites for one season and tracheal mites for one year.

Precautionary Statements

FIRST AID STATEMENT If inhaled Move person to fresh air. If a person is not breathing, call 911 or an ambulance, then give artificial respiration, preferably by mouth-to-mouth, if possible. Call a poison control center or doctor for further treatment advice. If on skin or clothing Take off contaminated clothing Rinse skin immediately with plenty of water for 15-20 minutes. Call a poison control center or doctor for treatment advice. If in eyes Hold eye open and rinse slowly and gently with water for 15-20 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present, after the first 5 minutes, then continue rinsing eye. Call a poison control center or doctor for treatment advice If swallowed Call a poison control center or doctor for further treatment advice. Have a person sip a glass of water if able to swallow. Do not induce vomiting unless told to do so by the poison control center or doctor. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person Poison Control Center HOT LINE NUMBER 1-800-222-1222 Have the product container with you when calling a poison control center or doctor, or going for treatment. NOTE TO PHYSICIAN: Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

HAZARDOUS TO HUMANS AND DOMESTIC ANIMALS

DANGER - PELIGRO

Fatal if inhaled, absorbed through the skin, or swallowed. Do not breathe vapors. Corrosive. Causes skin burns and irreversible eye damage. Do not get on skin, eyes, or clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling and before eating, drinking, chewing gum or using tobacco. Remove and wash contaminated clothing before reuse.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Applicators or handlers must wear standard beekeeping PPE (bee veil, coveralls over a long sleeve shirt, long pants, socks, shoes), and they must wear protective eyewear (goggles or safety glasses), acid resistant gloves (PVC, neoprene, or nitrile), and wear a respirator with an organic-vapor removing cartridge with a prefilter approved for pesticides (MSHA/NIOSH approval number prefix TC-23C), or a canister approved for pesticides (MSHA/NIOSH approval number prefix TC-14G), or a NIOSH approved respirator with an organic vapor (OV) cartridge or canister with any N, R, P or HE prefilter. Clean or replace PPE at end of each day's work period. Rinse off pesticides at rest breaks. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning/maintaining PPE. If no such instructions for washables, use detergent and hot water. Keep and wash PPE separately from other laundry.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

For terrestrial use: Do not apply directly to water or to areas where surface water is present or to intertidal areas below the mean high water mark. Do not contaminate water when disposing of used pad, wash water or rinsate.

PHYSICAL OR CHEMICAL HAZARDS

Corrosive - Do not allow product to contact metal surfaces. Do not place, even briefly, on metallic hive covers. Store unused product in original container.

User Safety Recommendations: Users should remove Personal Protective Equipment/clothing immediately if pesticide gets inside.  Wash thoroughly and put on clean clothing. Replace chemical gloves if punctured or stretched. Have water readily available should skin or eye contact occur. Only use out of doors, stand upwind of product. Use caution when opening the container, especially in warm weather.

Agricultural Use Requirements

Use this product only in accordance with its labeling and with the Worker Protection Standard, 40 CFR part 170. This standard contains requirements for the protection of agricultural workers on farms, forests, nurseries, and greenhouses, and handlers of agricultural pesticides. It contains requirements for training, decontamination, notification, and emergency assistance. It also contains specific instructions and exceptions pertaining to the statements on this label about personal protective equipment (PPE), notification to workers, and restricted-entry interval. The requirements in this box apply to uses of this product that are covered by the Worker Protection Standard. Re-entry interval: Do not enter or allow worker entry into treated area (bee yard) during the restricted entry interval (REI) of 48 hrs. The REI is 72 hours in outdoor areas where average annual rainfall is less than 25 inches a year. Appropriate PPE as listed must be worn for re-entry into the treated area (bee yard) after the 48 hour REI and within the remaining 19 days of the treatment period (total treatment period is 21 days). PPE required for entry into treated bee yards (that is permitted under the Worker Protection Standard and that involves contact with anything that has been treated), is: Wear coveralls over a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, socks and shoes, acid resistant gloves (PVC, neoprene or nitrile), and protective eyewear. Wear a respirator with an organic-vapor removing cartridge with a pre-filter approved for pesticides (MSHA/NIOSH approval number prefix TC-23C), or a canister approved for pesticides (MSHA/NIOSH approval number prefix TC-14G), or a NIOSH approved respirator with an organic vapor (OV) cartridge or canister with any N, R, P or HE pre-filter. Notify workers of the application by warning them orally and by posting warning signs at entrances to treated bee yards. Posting in the bee yard should read as follows: The hives in this bee yard have been treated with Mite Away Single Application Formic Acid Pads. Treatment was applied: Date and time. Do not open the bee hives in this yard until after the 48 hour REI unless wearing PPE as stated on the product label at any time within the 21 day treatment period.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE - Mite Away

It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. Do not apply this product in a way that will contact workers or other persons, either directly or through drift. Only protected handlers may be in the area during application. For any requirements specific to your State, consult the Agency in your State responsible for pesticide regulation.

WHEN TO TREAT
Use Mite AwayII™ as part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. Treat only if treatment thresholds are exceeded. Treatment period for this product is 21 days. Treatment ends at day 21.

When treatment levels are reached, use Mite AwayII™ for single or double brood-chamber, standard Langstroth equipment honeybee hives, honeybee colony covering 6 - 20 frames. Outside daytime temperature highs should be between 50 - 79ºF at the time of application. Remove pads from the hives in the event of a heat wave (if daily temperature highs exceed 82ºF) within the first 7 days of treatment. Store in the original container and follow the Precautionary Statements as set out on this label. Resume treatment by replacing the pads in the hives after the end of the heat wave. Do not use if temperature exceeds 82°F during the application period. Temperatures above 82°F during the treatment period may cause excessive damage to the colonies. Failure to remove the pads during a heat wave can cause excessive brood mortality and absconding.

Up to 14 days of brood mortality may occur in the initial stage of treatment, with single brood-chamber hives being more susceptible to damage than double brood-chamber hives. Overall colony health is not expected to be affected, with brood rearing returning to normal by the end of treatment. Treatment of smaller colonies than those listed on the label will result in excessive brood mortality and even in colony mortality.

Do not treat during honey flow. No honey supers can be on the hive during the 21 day treatment period. For treatment before honey flow: Supers may be placed on the hive immediately after the full 21 day treatment period and the spent Mite AwayII™ has been removed. However, allow at least two weeks after the end of treatment before harvesting honey. This ensures that any remaining formic acid has dissipated to naturally occurring background levels. For treatment after the honey flow: Remove all honey supers from the hive before starting treatment. 

APPLICATION
Remove the Mite AwayII™ from the outer pouch. DO NOT REMOVE THE PAD FROM THE INNER PERFORATED POUCH. Place one Mite AwayII™ with the HOLES DOWN on two 4 inch x 0.5 inch x 0.5 inch spacer sticks (not provided), placed 4 inches apart on the frame top bars. Place a 1.5 inch rim on the top box to accommodate the pad, the spacer sticks, and an additional 0.5 inch space between the pad and inner cover. Leave the Mite AwayII™ pad in place for 21 days. Remove the pad after day 21 of the treatment period.

Seal all holes in the hive except the bottom hive entrance, which needs to be fully open for the entire duration of treatment. Entrance reducers MUST be removed to prevent excessive damage to the colonies. Treat all bee colonies in the apiary at the same time. Allow a minimum of one month between applications.

STORAGE AND DISPOSAL Do not contaminate water, food, or feed by storage or disposal. STORAGE: Store in original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area away from sulphuric acid, oxidizing agents, and sources of ignition and away from the reach of children. Avoid heat, sparks, and open flames. Do not eat, drink or smoke in areas of use or storage. Use caution when opening the container, especially in warm weather, i.e.: open outdoors and stay downwind. Keep separate to prevent cross-contamination of other pesticides, fertilizer, food, or feed. FOR DISPOSAL OF UNUSED, UNWANTED, OR DAMAGED PRODUCT: CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER or the National Pesticide Information Center at 800-858-7378 (www.npic.orst.edu). CONTAINER DISPOSAL: Place in trash or offer for recycling if available. If partly filled: Call your local solid waste agency or (800-858-7378/www.npic.orst.edu) for disposal instructions.  PLASTIC BAG (OUTER WRAP) DISPOSAL: Rinse or air dry empty outer pouch, wearing PPE, and then dispose in a sanitary landfill or by incineration, or, if allowed by state and local authorities, by burning. If burned, stay out of smoke. USED PADS DISPOSAL: Do not reuse empty or used pads. Ventilate perforated pouches containing used pads on site, protected from precipitation, for two weeks prior to disposal. Dispose used pads as non-hazardous material, in landfill or by incineration, or, if allowed by State and local authorities, by burning. If burned, stay out of smoke. Pesticide wastes are acutely hazardous. Improper disposal of excess pesticide is a violation of Federal Law. If these wastes cannot be disposed of by use according to label instructions, contact your State Pesticide or Environmental Control Agency, or the Hazardous Waste Representative at the nearest EPA Regional Office for guidance.
