“After having experimented with many formic acid treatment methods for over 10 years, I have found Mite Away pads to be easily incorporated into both spring and fall bee yard managements. They are an economical, natural and effective control for both mites.”

Bee friends, Just wanted to share my recent very positive experience using the Mitwaway formic acid pad for treatment of tracheal and varroa mites.  Many thanks to Dr. Tarpy for getting us the word via the state newsletter about the approval and contact info;  to the incredibly friendly and helpful folks at NOD Apiary Products in Ontario for getting the pads out there and at Rossman Apiaries in Moultrie, Ga, for being the local distributor.  We got a nicely packed bucket of 10 pads in just a couple of days after we called in the order  , with even the little sticks to lay them on and a sample frame for holding up the inner cover the right distance....for $43.., 10 pads, enough to treat 10 hives for the fall, or whatever...  I had followed the counts closely and they had gone from their lovely 20ish level of all year, up to 70 in late August (when we ordered the Mite Away) and then to 80plus by the end of Sept.  Then it was a waiting game for the temperature to drop...it did, and I put the pad on my one hive Oct 8 and took it off 21 days later...it was very easy to use.  Did the first post treatment mite check yesterday and counted 14 mites!  I'm sold.  Will follow the counts and treat again in the spring it needed.  Go to www.Mite Away.com.  Rossman is at www.GAbees.com. Thanks to all!  Jean Chapman and the happy (nearly) mite-free bees in Bear Creek

Dear David:

I want to let you know that I have now used your Mite Away pads twice and am very pleased with the Varroa control.  We use them on approximately 200 hives.

Our treatment was roughly the beginning of October.  To put that into perspective, our first hard frost is normally about October 15.  It takes us more than one day for the application, so we choose the exact day to start based on a weather forecast that does not expect any daytime temperatures exceeding 80 degrees.  We have not had any noticeable difficulty with killing bees or the queen.

We open the buckets and take the pads out of the plastic over-wrap in advance of the actual application.  Our typical yard has 30 hives.  About a month after putting the pads on, we return to remove the pads and spacers and reassemble the tops with the inner covers.  We store the spacers in the bee yard, under an outer cover.

As you know, we produce a lot of comb honey.  While our comb honey has never tested positive for any miticides, I know that miticides have been accumulating in the brood wax and I am looking forward to gradually replacing my brood combs to remove any miticides traces.  The Mite Away pads coupled with other IPM techniques such as removal of drone brood and screened bottom boards will finally let me get off the miticides bandwagon.

Thank you for enduring the arduous process to develop, manufacture, register and market this product.  We are indebted to you.

Best regards,
Lloyd

David,

Just a few notes on our experience using the Mite Away.

A few years ago I started attaching a rim to all of our covers for pollen patties, etc. This rim has made it very easy to use the Mite Away pads. The first application of Mite Away went on two-thirds of our colonies in May of 2005, as soon as the EPA Section 3 registration was final. We were unable to treat all the colonies due to time constraints, but it gave us a good comparison between treated and untreated colonies.
On the colonies treated with Mite Away saw no adverse effects to the bees.  After 3 weeks all the Mite Away pads were removed and the bees looked very good.  I was very pleased to see that over summer the mite levels in the colonies treated with Mite Away remained very low to non-existent.

In the colonies that were not treated the mite levels increased over summer to very high levels by Late July and early August. The comparison of treated and untreated colonies was shocking.

The Mite Away pads were very easy to use, both installing and removing. The bees look great this fall, heavy, and with good populations. We are extremely pleased with the results of the Mite Away.

After the trials in 2002 were completed the data showed that Mite AwayII™ used spring and fall would give adequate varroa and tracheal mite control with no other treatments being necessary. Especially since we would be asking other beekeepers to risk their own bees to a MAII treatment regimen, I decided to leave Apistan® behind and switch over, even though we had no resistance to Apistan®. Four years into the MAII treatment program I’m pleased to report the bees are doing well, winter mortality is lower than before, and last years’ crop was excellent.  MAII is a proven stand alone treatment product!

We have been using Mite Away products to protect our bees from mites for the past five years with good results. In the past two years we have used Mite Away in both spring and fall applications.  Our bee build up in the spring ready for the early honey flows and we are able to extract into September due to the extended season with the formic treatment verses the hard chemical strips. The bees have responded well to this treatment with winter losses due to unexplained causes below 5%.

We currently operate a 350 colony apiary using organic beekeeping practices. We plan to continue to use Mite Away to protect our bees.

“Several beekeepers have been using Mite AwayII™ in the fall instead of the hard chemicals. They report good success.”

“Beekeepers in the areas of resistance to both hard chemicals need to use this method for sure…. in other areas should consider switching to this treatment to alternate (with hard chemicals)”
